will we ever accept the small bag invasion?

Since the rise of the "it-bag" it seems we've all gone big bag crazy. The whole world now seems to want and need to bring everything but the kitchen sink around everyday, and the gigantic 'it' bags fit the bill perfectly (*yes red mulberry bag 07 of my dreams, i mean you!*), but it seems of late fashion is trying to convert us to the tiny-clutch-pointlessly-small side, and i'm wondering whether most of us will ever be truly able to give big bags up.

Autumn/Winter 08 has shown a huge amount of tiny bags donning the model hands of the catwalks, some so small they practically can't even be classed as purses.

micheal kors, marc jacobs, marni a/w 08 style
What could you fit in these? A lipstick? A few coins? A pen?
Don't get me wrong as a young, un-employed (well... i don't need a bag for my *ahem* 'employment') girl, i should be more than satisfied with the small, lightweight and attractive offerings from three of my favourite accesory labels. They're light weight- no shooting back pain, they force you to cut down on baggage- helps you keep organised, they're adorable- a major cause of my bag obsession. But somehow, i can't make myself like them.

I could say i don't know why this is, but since i emptied out my bag after a shopping trip, i can kind of see why...

From left to right: ipod, i-D, empty water bottle, glasses, purse, bank book, lip balm, hairbands hairclip, necklace, mirror, change, train tickets and boots card, giant hairclip, vaseline, foundation, cheeky chimp moisture wipes, phone, change purse, random reciepts, mints, nail polish.

I can feel the inklings of a try-a-small-bag for a day experiment coming on...

Hi Molly!
I'd love a link exchange - already added you to my Fellow Fashionistas!

I am a big fan of the clutch - it's fun to tuck one inside a larger handbag and then pull it out for night with just a few essentials stowed inside. You made some sweet editing choices here in the 3 you've shown!

Gah, however pretty they are, I don't really like clutches during the day, I like my wallet huge, a book and a notebook in my bag...so I don't think I'll ever give up my big bags! but love the selection! (Link exchange would be great :D!)

i can't get into small bags either. or really big ones. i'm all about the semi large or medium bags. but unless i'm going out, i need a smallish purse that i can hold easily or tuck away. big purses just get in the way, you know? aye, now i'm rambling. thanks for your comment again. :)

I would love to exchange links!

I picked up some vintage bags recently that are quite small and it is so hard to choose what I will give up for the day when I use one of them.

ahh it's so tempting. i have no idea how i would fit all of my stuff in there though.

I don't know how I do it. I usually walk away from the computer screen in a daze.... hahah. But I always replied and now just cannot seem to stop. I feel bad. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. And it's fun. I do, however, take manymanymany breaks in between.

Happy New Year,love! X

i've ordered a small bag and am waiting for its delivery. i'll be using it when i go out with friends or for meetings and such when all i really need is my cell and wallet. i use my other bag as a book bag, so it needs to be a bit bigger.

and i've added your blog!

i totally wouldn't be able to survive without a suuuuperbig bag.
it's just that all my necessities need a trusty home, and a little tiny clutch just wouldn't cut it. (although some of them are reaaally cute). but when it comes to big nights on the town, where i can do without my favourite book and mittens, then i could totally be found with a small bag.

I'm really not a fan of small bags. But, nowadays, I think I have to have just one small bag for going to the mall. Yay, thanks for this post! :)

I can't carry much because I get really bad back pain so now I have a tiny bag with a crossbody strap. It only fits my phone, keys purse and a lip balm. Its hard to leave go of all the other stuff - I have to admit that even though I'm not supposed to I sometimes bring out a bigger bag and suffer the pain!

I've added you to my links!

Eek as nice as the small clutches look, I think they are only really practical on an evening out. For day time a larger handbag is definitely in order!

Molly. Sure we can trade links, I was just wondering if you're the same Molly from Fashionyou I've got in my links, so I can just change your URL. Let me know when you've added me to your list!

I like clutches, but they're not useful for me at all. Purses and big bags are good to me :)

I got to say, I'm not a fan of the small bag. They're just so...unpractical. I need something that's able to carry ALL my crap!

Cate said...

Hm, I don't know... I kind of like tiny bags, even though they are highly impractical. I don't like to use huuuge bags so much, except for school, obviously.
I hated the oversized clutch trend, oversized clutches look like pillowcases in my opinion.
I mostly take medium-sized bags, even for grocery shopping - I take an extra shopping bag then! :)
I empty out my bag every two days or so, because I like to change bags very often..

And yeah, I have also fallen in love with someone no one should fall in love with...

Cate
