I've seen a few bloggers post about the esteemed ITS awards that were published in the January 09 issue of i-D. However, none that i have seen have posted about the incredibly talented Valentim Manuel Estevao Quaresma, and accessory designer from Portugal, and winner of the accessory ITS, the only award for jewellers worldwide, which i think is a bit of a large accolade to withhold!
Valentims collection by his own name consists of recycled materials, which really appealed to me (not because i'm particually eco-friendly, but because i like a good old diy project). Dubbed as 'showing the perfect balance of agnostic features' by Isobel Simoes Marques, he mixes common items with his jewellery degree expertise to create items that look as if they were created by nature. Many of the body pieces make the wearer look as if they have been mythically enhanced, with spider-like and spine back pieces and ornaments that distort our ideal image of 'jewellery perfection' that labels like H.Samuels play around with.
Some of the items he's created are really beautiful, and while they aren't exactly 'ready to wear', they would definitely look incredible in editorial features. One of the collections that particularly caught my eye was the winter 06 collection (one of his collections prior to winning the ITS award). It consists of recycled head pieces and chain-mail type neck and arm pieces, that are very reminiscent of a medieval soldier's armour, non?
Perhaps not items to wear to work, but definitely something pretty to look at.

amazing pictures, the first one is my favorite!
wow those are great!! xo
love the metallic look
and im glad you agree with me about the lil wayne! :)
the arm piece is cool and, if made smaller, could actually be incorporated into everyday wear. the masks would be amazing for a masquerade!
I would totally wear those arm/chest pieces with a long sleeved body con dress. people should always dress medieval.
i find them quite scary to look at.. maybe i'm missing something? hmm.
❤sb
They're great pieces, but as you said, they're not very practical or something any of us, common people, would wear.
I've added you to my links too!
♥
Oh these are really neato. I love medieval-inspired things. But I can appreciate that these are a little more "rustic-looking" than, say, D&G armour from Fall 07.
i so love these items!! and wow.. you really surprise me with your comment, i didn't knew GG hasn't aired in England.. but you can see it online, i think. For example, one time I missed it and ii look for the episode a fay after it was aired and it appeared andwith HQ!
Wow could totally see a subdued version of these pieces as ready-to-wear. Mmmm I love armor/warrior/weaponry jewelery...
this is so super cool, futuristic, yet still somehow from the past! :]
thanks for the lovely comment, my dear. I love talking my brother into playing photographer to my model haha- even when he protests, he gets into it after a while and gets all "creative" which is great! xxx

and yes i agree with Audrey having bambi eyes! she is so stunning it hurts! xxxx LM
Wow that mask thing is amazing. Kind of Prehistoric.
They are a bit scary. They look a bit like the wearer's face was covered in insects, or that the wearer (the one who wears them ;-)) has some disease. I don't really like them...
Don't stress yourself about the comments back!!
Kisses,
Cate
