celebrity

I must admit that i'm a little dissapointed in English Vogue.

As a reader of the prestigious magazine i must say i am usually proud of Alexandra Schulmans descisions, as the whole image of Vogue usually ends up embodying the fresh and eccentric style that is associated with London and England. It usually contains interviews with the freshest designers, and free-lance articles informing the public of the latest trends, and how to wear them. It USUALLY contains beautiful and classic editorials taken by the likes of Tim Walker (my future fiance), Patrick Demarchelier, and Tom Craig.

Usually, I find its only comparison in the Vogue family of that of France and Nippon. But, alas, good things never last. I could just about tolerate the whole Victoria Beckham cover story, but THIS is too much for me to handle:

The magazine features Cheryl Cole as the cover, accompanyed with a 9 page interview by Christa D'Souza, and photographs of her by Regan Cameron. I agree that the pictures are gorgeous, and she looks incredible, but i dont think i'm ready for Vogue to follow the celebrity parade such as Elle and Harpers.

Buying this, and reading the interview, it got me wondering why we are so infactuated with celebrity fashion. The most popular Celebrities in the media are usually over-airbrushed and over-styled. The faces of Britains popular magazines should be real people who aren't afraid to wear things and do things that don't fit the pattern of 'cookie-cutter' celebrities that are ever popular. For example, would you not rather see emerging models such as Daisy Lowe, or Alice Dellal gracing the cover? In the recent Vogue video based around the current issue, Schulman says that it is "a fascinating interview with someone who hasn’t talked about themselves publicly very much.”. Without sounding too 14 going on 40 , i know i'd much rather see girls like these on the cover...

i agree with you, "vogue" is for true style icons, not flash-in-the-pan celebs...i dont even know who that woman is!

I love English Vogue, when ever my dad passes through Heathrow on one of his trips I always have him pick me up a copy. I totally agree with your frustration over the cover and interview though. I personally dont even read celebrity interview in my fashion magazines. Its so much more interesting seeing real people's style and looking at the editorials anyway.

..when this copy arrived at my doorstep I went online and looked for the customer services phone number so that if next month this atrocity happens again I would call and cancel my subscription. I don't even know what Chery Cole is famous for...Great post, I would much rather see that Asian girl with huge yellow bag on the cover too heh

First and foremost, Britain's going through a recession and in the pursuit of keeping Vogue sales up, putting the real life ugly duckling/cinderella/poster child of all that is relatable to the general public is a stroke of pure genius. I do have a massive soft spot for cheryl cole (Newcastle, woo!) you can't class her as your average WAG, as she's gotten where she is by being honest, talented and hard-working and she deserves it all! Daisy Lowe is a terrible example because even though I'd kill to be her, she's just another IT girl blagging her was on looks, youth and famous parentage.
Where I live, I know so many more people who class Cheryl as their style icon and idol than those who swoon over quirky syle magicians, and its nice to feel less removed from the ivory towers of Vogue.
Love the post! I like debating, if you couldn't already tell!

I actually have no idea who she is, but I can say in general I find real people who are self styled to be more interesting.

Not too controversial at all :) I agree i'm far more inspired by so called 'street style' than that of 'celebrities' and those feathers! Oh my, they're wonderful!

True that!

I agree with you! This cover looks terrible, it's not high fashion at all. That girl in the feather mink is really adorable, yep I would have prefered her on the cover -- something unique and risky is better than something safe yet dull :) You have a great blog, would you like to exchange links?

I bought Vogue Britain only once, when Kate Moss was [once again] on the cover.. And I don't know. I'm not a big fan of Vogue altogether, it's pretty stuck-up I think.
Cheryl Cole? She looks like Kate Beckinsale, so airbrushed.
Arh, don't worry! At least posts like this are interesting, don't bother with a lighter subject. Criticism is usually more fun to read than just "ohhhh this is perfect" and "ohhh i love this". Keep it up ^^

Cate

When I unwrapped this issue of Vogue, I just stared at it blankly. I can't believe how many pages were devoted to her. British Vogue lets me down so often.
I love this blog though! I'd love to exchange links. x

i think you guys are a little spoiled across the pond with your u.k. editions having actual models on the cover from time to time. i haven't seen a model on the cover of a u.s. publication since god, the late 90's. It's obscene. i'm so jealous of you guys! :)
